A fun and lively story, appropriate for families with children age 7 and older.

Anschel Katshke and his friends, Magda and Yasha, live in tenement apartments on the Lower Eastside of New York City in 1910. Calling themselves the Rag Rats, they are constantly on the lookout for adventure as they roam the streets, collecting rags and scraps of old coats to sell to the various merchants who inhabit the thriving Jewish garment district. As Chanukah approaches, Anschel’s mother, Zeftel, cautions her son not to count on any gelt this year, as they have barely enough money for a few remaining potato cakes. When Anschel and his friends stumble upon a mysterious key, however, they set off on an exciting odyssey in search of stolen treasures, a journey which takes them into the shady and notorious underworld of New York. Through the danger and the mayhem, Anschel must make the choice between his own desperate need and doing what is right, and in doing so, he discovers the enduring hope that comes with it.
