Music, dance and poetry come together again at Patrick’s Cabaret to show off the cultural diversity of the Twin Cities. Paulino brings together talented local artists for two nights where the common thread is golden: la cultura hispana. Don’t miss it!Robert EverestFuego Latino FolclorGrupo Folklorico "Mexico Lindo"Corazon LatinoGuest Curator: Paulino BrenerABOUT THE ARTISTS:ROBERT EVEREST is a Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter/guitarist who has thoroughly and joyfully been exploring the music of the world for the last 20 years. Latin American music makes up the majority of his repertoire, but he also plays a lot of music from Southern Europe, singing in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and English. In February he was invited to West Africa to perform with Togolese musician Yawo Attivor, a new direction in his musical exploration into West African and Middle-Eastern musical styles. Robert has been a featured performer at the Walker Art Center, the MIA, and Orchestra Hall, and on several local television and radio stations, most notably in a performance alongside Chilean author Isabel Allende at the Fitzgerald Theatre for the MPR program ’Talking Volumes’. (International tour destinations include Paris, Florence, Madrid, Bern, Buenos Aires, Budapest, and Rio De Janeiro).***FUEGO LATINO is a group of freelance dancers all Hispanic, performing folkloric dances from Colombia since 2002. The group is committed with the rehearsals, doing research on dances, costumes, music, finding places to rehears at, etc. The group has been a success because the great skills and ideas all the dancers bring to it, as well as the extent hours the dancers have been willing to invest. Dancers are very committed with and proud of their Hispanic community; therefore, through performances this group would like to bring more awareness of culture, dances and rhythms. The group will be dancing a Cumbia (CUM-bi-a. The "i" is pronounced like "ee"), which is originally a Colombian folk dance and it is Colombia’s representative national dance. Cumbia is believed to be a variant of the African Guinean cumbe music. Cumbia started in the northern region of Colombia, mainly in or around Cartagena port during the period of Spanish colonization (1500’s). It is the intersection of two cultures that settled at different times: The Amerindians and African slaves. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the slave population, and was later mixed with European instruments and other influences. The African slaves tried to preserve their musical traditions, using the drums and dances as courtship rituals. This also allowed them to dispel the pain and exhaustion from their hard work. Women wearing long skirts -traditionally white and red (since they were made out of the tablecloth), weave them graciously while responding not very convinced to the men flirting. Men wearing white outfit, a red scarf, a wooded bag and a hat, move more insistently towards women trying to gain their attention.***El GRUPO FOLKLORICO "MEXICO LINDO" , founded November 14, 1999, is a group of children, youth and adults members of the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Minneapolis, MN.They have been doing many presentations throughout the state of Minnesota since 2000. This group was formed to provide a positive program for children, youth and adults where they can spend time and energy developing a fun and safe environment. There are 30 dancers in the group and they present dances from 14 different regions of Mexico.Description: Traditional dances from Mexico representing different regions.****CORAZON LATINO grew out of PLAC’s La Semana culture camp, with the purpose of retaining and enhancing those skills learned and to share this part of the Latin American culture with the community. It is a performance-oriented troupe, a group of people whose ultimate goal is a highly polished performance. Participants love to dance, are willing to take direction and work hard toward that end. The goal is also to provide each child equal opportunity to perform. The dance troupe is open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 12 whose families are members of Parents of Latin American Children.Description of performance: Traditional dances from Argentina and Modern dance with Spanish music***PAULINO BRENER was born in Santo Tomé, Santa Fe, Argentina. He has been doing theater and dance in the Twin Cities since 2001, with companies such as Teatro del Pueblo, Trece Lunas Arts Collective, Sandbox Theatre and Ethnic Dance Theater. He has also been guest curator and performer at Patrick’s Cabaret. Paulino is a Spanish teacher at Spring Hill Waldorf School in Excelsior, MN. He uses art to connect and share with people around him. He is passionate about languages and cultures, teaching children, performing and doing crafts -such as knitting-.
